How to Setup a Page Funnel Report in ga4

The analytics page funnel illustrates on which pages visitors arrive on the website, their journey through the website, and their leaving page.

Using the page funnel, the greater used pages are easy to see and the subsequent drop off pages can help to understand any issues with the website.

Google Analytics version 3 (Universal Analytics) incorporated a page funnel. To use this illuminating tool with version 4 of Google’s Analytics requires more setup.

The ga4 page funnel visualisation can be used with any kind of event. This includes impressions, clicks and page views. It’s also possible to incorporate within the funnel analysis report:

  • create a comparison of the conversion rates as defined by up to 4 different segments, for example mobile or desktop.
  • the time elapsed between each step of the funnel.
  • breakdown of the funnel steps showing their traffic sources and other dimensions.
  • identify the follow-on events, the event which follows each step in the funnel.
  • exclude users who would never be able to convert, e.g. outside of supported country or region

There is more to the funnel report in ga4 than its predecessor.

To create a new funnel.

From the left hand menu click on Analysis. From the expanded sub menu items click on Analysis Hub.

The next page shows the list of existing funnels analyses with above image links for the creation of a new analysis. The Path analysis option is a representation of the old ga3 path analysis.

The next page shows two columns with tabs:

  • Variables
  • Tab Settings
  • Exploration Tab

Variables

Within this tab enter the name for your funnel, set a time frame and configure segments and dimensions for use in the funnel

Tab Settings

Define the operation of the analysis. This will include the visualisation, segment comparisons and a breakdown of the funnel. The individual funnel steps are also configured here.

Exploration Tab

A visualisation of the funnel is given here, allowing you to create your funnel and understand the actions which your settings options will have.

With the above settings configured the funnel can be given a name to make it easy to understand its usage.

A date range can be set, for example last 7 days, or last 30 days.

The funnel visualisation can be either standard or trended, to show how the funnel is changing over time. This latter is a useful reference when changes are being made with an aim to improve the count in a funnel.
