Visiting your own website with Google analytics permitted, and data recorded can skew your analytics results.
Counteract the misinformation caused by including your visits in Google ga4 analytics by excluding your IP address, or range of addresses.
After all you probably visit your website more than anyone else. With all that blogging and amendments to the pages necessary to keep the content of the website fresh and interesting.
Finding your IP address
You can find the public IP address you are currently using by searching what is my ip address on Google. Other sites are available which provide a simple confirmation of the value.
The value given as your public IP address will be used later.
Adding your IP address to filter
From the GA4 Analytics view click on Admin in the left hand menu. Listed as the last item.
From the Property column (the second one) click on Data Streams.
A default entry is given which was created when the GA4 Anayltics was setup.
Click on this entry to see a summary of its configuration settings. At the bottom click on More Tagging Settings.
On the More tagging settings page these options are shown:
- Modify events
- Create events
- Configure your domains
- Define internal traffic
- List unwanted referrals
From the above click on Define internal traffic. On the next screen click on the blue Create button.
Complete the field entries:
- Rule name – a name defining this set of IP addresses. Maybe an office location.
- traffic_type value – internal is the default value
- IP address – An IP address or range can be added. There’s a number of criteria to use.
Options for the IP addresses option Match types are:
- IP address begins with
- IP address contains
- IP address end with
- IP address equals
- IP address is in range (CIDR notation).
IP addresses take two forms, the older type looks similar to 87.121.33.88.
Check the IP address which you have been assigned over a period of a few weeks. Its likely, unless you have been explicitly given an IP address, that you will be given other values. Is do you may wish to choose the begins with option. Note that this will obviously exclude others from the same provider with this match from your statistics.
Click on the blue Create button in the top right corner when you are finished.
Close each of the popup widows by clicking on the cross in the top left corner of each. Returning back to the initial admin view.
Click on the Home icon in the left menu top entry.
Below this click on Real-time to view the website visitors. Visit your and navigate your website to confirm that you are not included within the recorded visitors.
