Google Search Operators

Additional operators can be added to a Google search to qualify the results retrieved. Link, site and cache are the most well known, limiting the results returned to links to the site, results within the site and google’s current cached version of the URL respectively.

To use the parameter precede the search term with the parameter, for example: site:www.vntweb.co.uk

allinanchor

The allinanchor: operator is positioned at the start of the search box. The operator is useful for restricting the search responses provided, avoiding other offerings from Google, which are deemed to be similar.  Using more parameters will refine the results. allinanchor: android tablet debian

allintext

The search results from Google are restricted to those where the words in the search are included within the the of the website page. allintext: home automation server

allintitle

This operator will restrict the results returned where all of the terms are included within the title allintitle: mythtv pvr

allinurl

Like the four preceding items allinurl searches for entries where all of the words are included, in this case in the URL. Some websites use parameters to define the page, for example www.mysite.co.uk?tabid=56. This operator won’t work well in this instance. allinurl: faq

cache

This shows the Google cache version of a web page.Additional words can be added at the end, separated by spaces. The cached results for the page are then shown with these words highlighted. cache:www.vntweb.co.uk

define

Provides a definition of the search term. define:content management system

filetype

This can be used to restrict the pages returned to those of a given type, for example .doc or .pdf. reading transport filetype:pdf

inanchor

Using the inanchor operator within a Google search will restrict the results shown to those which include the additional word terms within the anchor text of the links on websites. pvr server inanchor:mythtv

info

For this operator Google will show information about the web page. Options listed include references to:

  • Google’s cache
  • similar web pages
  • web pages which link to the URL
  • web page from the site
  • web pages which contain the given term

info:www.vntweb.co.uk

intext

the words in the search must appear in the text of the web page intext: wordpress joomla

intitle

The search words given must appear in the title of the web page. intitle: dotnetnuke

inurl

The URL of the web page must include the search words given. inurl: zencart ip address

link

Find the web pages which link to the address given. link:www.vntweb.co.uk

location

Location is associated with Google News. Including location within the search query will limit the results to the given location website design location:reading

related

A list of similar web pages will be listed. related:www.debian.org

site

Using site with an associated URL as part of your search will restrict the search results to those from that URL. site:www.vntweb.co.uk
