Wi-Fi Opting Out of Location Service Database

Mozilla recently published an article detailing how to stop the saving of a Wi-Fi access point’s location and details in their location service database.

The article included details about preventing a wireless access point from being indexed. The suggestion was that to request for a wireless access point not to be included in location mapping a simple extension should be added to the naming of the Wi-Fi access point’s name.

The addition of _nomap to the SSID name of the wireless access point will indicate to services such as Mozilla’s that it should not be collected.

Although not an official standard this extension is being used to signify to location services, making services and scanners of Wi-Fi access points.

Google is supporting this nomenclature. The change to the SSID name excluding it from Google’s WPS database.

Similarly it is thought that Apple and Microsoft might follow suit.

Hiding the SSID will also ensure that it’s details are not collected.

Whilst updating your wireless access point take the time to update its firmware and to change the password from the default.
