Renaming a Windows Computer

After the initial installation of Windows on a computer its possible that you may wish to rename the Windows computer.

To rename a Windows computer, Windows 10 and the comparable Windows 2019 server using the settings menus.

Click on the Start menu and select the settings gear from the narrow left column.

From the settings groups shown, click on the System group. From the left hand menu of options click on About.

Within the main section click on the button Rename this PC.

A popup window entitled Rename your PC with confirmation of the current name and a textbox for the entry of the new name is shown. Enter your new name for the Windows based computer in this box.

Note: Windows server shows a window for the confirmation of allowing the app to make changes.

Click the button Next to proceed.

Following the change to the computer name its possible that other references will require amending. As an example the reference used for an SQL server is a shortening of the computer name. I’ve found this to be a maximum of 15 characters long.

As shown the Windows computer, name can be renamed via the settings control panel.
