Change Windows 10 Workgroup

The default Windows workgroup is set to WORKGROUP.

I like to set it as something different giving those computers within an environment the same workgroup name.

Scanning nearby devices, file servers, printers, will show those devices within the same workgroup.

Making changes from the default value will achieve some security benefit. As with changing port number for the ssh login or RDP it doesn’t stop access rather removing from the test for default settings.

To change the Windows 10 workgroup setting from the default value of WORKGROUP begin by clicking on the Settings gear in the start menu.

On the main popup settings window select System settings.

Click on About in the left menu. On this page are items relevant to the computer. Scroll down to the section Related settings. Click on System Info.

On this view we have the version of Windows details about the system and sections for the Windows product activation and settings for the computer name, domain and workgroup. Click on Change settings at the right of this section.

From the popup window click on the button Change, Alongside the text to rename this computer to change its domain or workgroup click Change.

Make your change to the workgroup, clicking OK as needed and reboot for the change to be effective.

There’s a popup window to confirm that a restart of the computer was required to apply the change of workgroup.

After clicking on close for the computer name and workgroup popup window there’s a further popup window prompting for a restart of the computer. If your work is saved and your able safely do so click on the Restart Now button.
