Install Opera on Debian

To install Opera on Debian the Opera repository needs to be added and then the Opera package installed.

In the actions taken below the command line will be used. For maintaining the packages on my main computer I mostly use  the command line, although sometimes it can be nice to see all of the packages laid out, together with search and filtering, in the Synaptics package manager.

Open a terminal program, such as Konsole. (Start>Applications>System>Konsole in KDE4). change to root user using su root and entering the associated password.

Adding Opera Repository

There are two repositories for Opera: stable and beta versions.  Both are listed below, the stable one is shown as active, with the beta one commented-out. deb http://deb.opera.com/opera stable non-free
#deb http://deb.opera.com/opera-beta stable non-free

The repositories are configured in the file /etc/apt/sources.list. Open the file with an editor such as vi vi /etc/apt/sources.list

Summary of vi command keys for adding the text: i – insert
a – append from cursor position
dd – delete line
<escape> – stop entering content
:w – write the file
:q – quit leave the file

Updating System apt Status

The apt package manager uses keys to help maintain the security of packages. Opera’s keys need to be added: gpg –keyserver subkeys.pgp.net –recv-key 6A423791
gpg –fingerprint 6A423791
gpg –armor –export 6A423791| apt-key add –

Having updated the sources.list  file apt needs to be updated with these details apt-get update

Installing Opera

Opera is then installed with apt-get install opera
